Week 4: Color and Lighting - Assignment 1

For this week's first assignment, I tried to get some shots of each of the color schemes discussed in the book: Monochrome, Analogous, and Complimentary.

First, I went out for some Monochrome shots. I found several outdoor subjects that fit the proper color scheme:

It was a little bit more difficult to come across subjects with an Analogous color scheme, but I believe I found an appropriate example with this helmet, which displays the colors Blue, Green, and Yellow. These three are all next to each other on the color wheel.

Finally, I went on a search for the Complimentary color scheme. I was fortunate enough to come across my Oilers jersey which is a perfect fit with its Blue and Orange coloring, which are opposite on the color wheel.

  1. I found this really fun it was like a scavenger hunt! I like the items that you picked. Is the second monochrome image a burnt piece of fire wood?

  2. I was going to ask the same question about the second photo. The first photo is my favorite, it's a really neat shot.

  3. It is! It's actually the spot where we dump all of the ashes from the wood stove throughout the winter.

  6. Excellent work on these. the helmet image is wonderful!

I need to warn you that black and white and grey are not mono"chrome" photographs. Chroma mean color. So, black is the absence of color and white is the inclusion of all colors...so grey is a balance between the two....

The image is awesome, nonetheless. Great depth of focus, bringing in the charred coal into focus. The Japanese Maple is an awesome example of a monochrome image....hands down.

The analogous photo is well done...composition is solid and the colors are perfect.
